"Blessing" the MNRF site

Here's a little taste of after hours at MNRF.

Every year the local Morris Dancers do a little ritual the local participants call "Blessing the Site" at the MN Renaissance Festival. It usually happens twice a year during the run of the festival. Below is a link to a short mp3 of the event this year. The whistle player stumbles a little, but I caught them at the very end of their procession around the inside perimeter of the entire site, so their whistle player was getting rather tired and was walking on uneven ground. I believe the official name for what they do is related to the "Abbots Bromley Horn Dance", but MNRF participants all refer to it as simply "Blessing the Site." On Sunday I asked what the name of tune was that they play but the dancer I asked couldn't remember off the top of his head.

To set the scene, by this time it was full dark on site, and away from the lights and noise of the "BLT" -the after-hours pub on site. You could -just- see the Morris Dancers in their white costumes, walking single file, each one carrying a rack of deer antlers, with a couple dozen participants quietly following in their wake. You can hear the crickets in the background, and periodically one of the dancer rings a single bell. Whatever your religion it can be a moving/spiritual experience to watch and a good example that it's not all parties and wild debauchery after hours at big Renfairs.

<a href="http://historicgames.com/sound/blessingsite.mp3">http://historicgames.com/sound/blessingsite.mp3</a>

Here's a similar street performance in England on Youtube with the tune played on fiddle. Although it's on a village street you can get a feeling for what it is like on the MNRF site in the dark and surrounded by oak trees and the silent buildings.
I'm looking for a ride to Faire from either Sebastopol or anywhere in the Napa Valley. I can also get down to Vallejo if there is anyone leaving from there. I am more than happy to help pay for gas and make an attempt at interesting conversation! :)
Thanks!

I started a new Tribe...

and I would *really* appreciate your help in getting the word out! It is a Tribe called "Service Animals" and it is for raisers, trainers and users of service animals. One of my goals with this new tribe is so I can learn more about other schools, other types of service animals (ie signal dogs). Also I want it to be a mega-mall of information!

So, if you know someone who is involved with service animals would you be so kind as to forward the link? It can be either on your tribe Friends' list or your private & personnel email lists (business contacts is up to you!). Also, posting it on your blog, your LJ, etc would also help to get the word out.

Thanks! Oh, and once it is up and running, feel free to drop by just to check it out or maybe ask a question....

Cheers!

Big Bear does a Victorian Faire!

Hey, all! I'm very excited to announce that the next Belles of Bedlam performance is going to be in just a few short days! We've done faires for the Big Bear Valley Renaissance society before, but this year they're excited to present their very first Victorian Faire! This coming Saturday and Sunday, July 5th & 6th, join the Belles, Sportive Tricks, and a wide variety of other exciting shows and entertainments!

Oh, and have I mentioned yet... We're doing a corset show! One third the clothes and five times the fun!

Here is a little more info:

The Big Bear Valley Renaissance Society, Inc. is delighted to announce our first Victorian Festival on July 5th and 6th, 2008, at our permanent site on the north shore of Big Bear Lake!

Hosted in the lovely little town of Fawnskin, the Victorian Festival is a day in Charles Dickens London: a city filled with lively and colorful characters from both literature and history. Come join us for an adventure in this elegant era with hundreds of costumed players in music halls, pubs and dance parties. Explore our winding lanes, finding trinkets and treasures while surrounded by enticing aromas of hearty foods and the joyous sound of music in the air.

Some of the activities will include a Victorian Tea, Tea with the Queen, and readings by Charles Dickens, Edgar Allan Poe, Mark Twain, and other literary artists of the 19th century. We will have demonstrations of the Gatling gun, cannon, and a battle of the Queen's Royal Army! Entertainment, such as the always exciting (and often titillating) Belles of Bedlam, will also be provided on five stages throughout the day. And, for the younger set, we will have the children's craft & game area.

While not all visitors come in costume, a great many do. The highlight of the event, the Grand Masque Ball under the stars on Saturday night, is a costumed affair, although a non-costumed gallery is available, if you would like to witness the glamorous spectacle.

Oh, and by the by... proceeds go to provide educational funds for the youth of Big Bear Valley. The funds will be used for, but not limited to, scholarships, teacher support funds and educational opportunities. So you're not just having fun, you're helping out the community!

Hope to see you there!

Well, it's done *sigh*. This would not be possible without Maggie’s help who, in addition to getting the Compendium published, proof read the pamphlet and corrected numerous errors.

I’m putting a finishing touches on it and will have it available on 16-June. It will be available in 2 formats: 1) Folded and cut into pamphlet form and 2) uncut with crop marks for easy reproduction and is coming to a Train Station near you.

Here’s the deal. Starting on 16-June I will be traveling from San Francisco to Seattle by way of Bakersfield and San Diego (Trains 718, 763, 14 and connecting buses). So, if you would like a copy send me a PM and I’ll arrange to drop copies off. With the exception of, Emeryville (2 stops), San Diego, L. A. (2 stops), San Jose, Oakland, Portland, and Seattle I’ll just have enough time to pop out of the door and hand you copies. I will be making final arrangements on the morning of the 16th.

There is no cost, although, an occasional soda would be nice. Have you seen the cost of things on AmTrak?

The original is in the British Library and can be viewed at: http://special-1.bl.uk/treasures/festivalbooks/pageview.aspx?strFest=0235&strPage=1 .

Yes they did append random e’s to a lot of words and also had a habit of switching “v”’s and “u”’s

Sadly, we have lost yet another family member.

On March 11, Jeff Huitt posted this Bulletin on MySpace. I confirmed with him that he was speaking of his brother Jim.
-----------------------------

"My brother died today
--------------
He was diagnosed with cancer many years ago.
They gave him an amount of time and he extended it. He did very well and it was almost gone. Then it came back stronger and took everything away.
He was full of life and almost always smiling even when it hurt.
I take for granted that I am healthy. I can take care of myself and my most basic needs. In the end he could not. His loving wife and my other older brother took care of him in his home. He was loved by friends and family in a comfortable surrounding til the end.
He was my big brother and now he is gone "
-------------------------------

I first met Jim when he managed Leather Roses for Debi Cable at Black Point. (That was the year we were nearly the very first booth in past the front gate. ) He was a real sweetheart, and I will miss him greatly. (I know he later worked for Oudeman (sp?) Glass. I'm not positive who else he worked for, though. )

My thoughts and prayers go out to his family and friends.

Converting stage acts to street performances - advice???

Hi there -
This is my first post here this year, and I thought I'd post a little introduction and a question to start things off.

First off, I'm Ayperi, and I'm a bellydancer in Madison, WI. I'm the contact person and manager for the act "Weno Gypsies," which is a Middle Eastern dance, music, history, fire dance, fantasy, and comedy act.

We performed at the Bristol Renaissance Faire (Kenosha, WI) last summer, the Camelot Medeval Festival (WI) in the fall, and the Janesville Renaissance Faire (WI) this spring. We are very happy and excited to be taking our act to Bristol again this year, but this year, rather than doing stage performances, like we have been for the past three faires we've done together, we were asked to do street performances.

Does any one have any advice for how to convert a stage act to the street? Any advice for street performers as to how to keep one's energy up while performing so much?

Thanks!!!
- Ayperi

Sometimes a dog's life includes not fun things, like being bit in the tongue by a rattlesnake while trying to protect your human. : (

Curtis the Dog (of Fowl Tales) is having a rough time of it. Bob is having a rough time, too. He has been in touch with the RESCUE folks and hopefully they will be able to help with the vet bills, not sure yet what's going on, as this is a developing situation. Updates will be posted, and (sorry) I will be cross-posting the info to other related tribes.
Please send good wishes and puppy prayers to the diety of choice ; )
Here's a link to Bob's profile here, if you would like to send him a note of encouragement to share with Curtis:

Update on my ride in the Tour De`Cure

Here is an update on my ride. With my online donations and what cash donations We (meaning all of you and myself) Raised just over $1,000. I just wanted to say thank you to you all.

I did much, much, better then I figured I would. It was a nice day for a ride, it was cool and overcast. This helped me greatly, since I don’t do well in the heat. Out of all of us riding in the 50 miler, I finished very high. I am not one for patting myself on the back. But, after 16 years of not riding and to do this well was a shock to me. I was just hoping to finish. But, it all came back to me and it was like I never left. Thanks again.

Music Video help?

I have a Video Final and I need a cast and crew. I am doing a music video for my final. This music video is for a band I have been working with for about a year and they are called ' The Domino Effect '. Their Song ' Sympathies and Condolences ' is what I was asked to produce. I need a flexible cast and crew that are willing to give up a few weekends to help out. I am going to most likely be filming in San Jose for most of it. I will know for certain when i get a call back from the dance studios I asked to film at.

If you would care to donate, Help out, Be in this video, Keep me sane, or teach. PLEASE CONTACT ME ON TRIBE!!!!

I need People. People willing to dress up in their Ren Faire attire and would be willing to have a war. I need about 5 people with two swords. And I am hoping that you are willing to help Teach a bit of sword Fighting to two of the band Members because they want to pop up randomly through out the music video. And I do Very much hope for people to supervise. I will have the band members most likely green screened into the shot so we can watch them and make sure that they don't kill each other.

I need People who are willing to dress up in regal attire, and walk through a garden. Very simple, Very fun and a pretty Place I plan to film at. Just contact me if you are willing to help out.

Now my favorite part. I need DANCERS!!! We are having a Dance scene where we have a ' ballroom ' filled with people dancing the Congress Of Vienna. Of course we are in need of people dressing up in Victorian attire. And I need people willing to teach a group how to Dance Congress!!! So Fezziwigger's are in High demand.
Costume approval?

So, I'm working Faire this time (Northern California)--as a boothie, as opposed to dancing in it/goofing about there. I've got what I'm pretty sure is passable garb (I've asked in the past, and people say it's alright). However, I know that I need to have my costume approved officially before I can actually participate and was just wondering what exactly was involved in this? I know it's pretty early still, but I've just trying to get on the right wavelength since I'm in the middle of sewing some new stuff right now, and the thought occurred to me! Thanks! :D

Jingly Bits

Sorry for the length of this and for the cross posting on several tribes, but after many agonizing months, we've made the really hard decision that we're going to be leaving California in the next month or so, probably not to return. If we do return, it won't be for several years...

The short version of the back story is that I was laid off from my engineering tech job last May. We've been living mainly off our savings and stock sales since then, but you can only go so long that way. I've been doing the high tech shuffle here in the "Valley of the Molten Sand" since '82 and I'm simply burned out on it... After this most recent lay off with me at 47 years old, as my mental and physical abilities have changed with age, I've lost my confidence to be employed in the only field I've worked in since entering adulthood. Now, if I even seriously think about re-entering the high tech workforce, I tense up to the point of starting to physically shake and tears start welling up... The few interviews I have forced myself to go on haven't turned out very well since it's pretty hard to sell oneself to a potential employer when one doesn't believe in oneself...

Anyway, as our resources here are starting to dwindle, we've got to do something soon or we'll wind up losing the equity in our house. To that end, we've made the exceedingly tough decision to sell our house here in San Jose and buy a house free-and-clear on more land back east, probably in the Ozark foothills of northern Arkansas. The whole financial equation changes drastically with no mortgage payments...

Now, before any of you get started on ribbing me about Arkansas, let me just say that I don't take it too well... Or, to practice for once I get there, "Ah don't cotton too kindly to folks sayin' thangs 'bout where Ah'm a'going an Ah ain't gonna stand fer it!" (I'm sure it won't take too long for me to get my Southern Drawl back... too bad it comes with all the other southern drawbacks.) I'm also working on getting one of my aunts to legally adopt Sherri... I mean, we're already married, but we'd fit in a smidge better if'n she was my cousin, too...

So, Jingly Bits will no longer be "bringing music to the quieter corners of the shire" at NCRF or any of the smaller circuit faires in California... We'd like to thank Molly for giving us the opportunity to grace the Curtain Call stage at Casa for the last couple of years. It was cool having Martin and the Naughty Minstrels as our warmup band last year... They did a pretty good job, but had a tendancy to lull the audience to sleep and then we'd get to wake them up!

Casa was (and always will be) our home faire. We started participating there as Friends of Faire under REC in 2003 and Arline (recently retired Mistress of the FOF Buttery) told Donnie (GM of Danse Macabre) that there was a new mandolin player in town... Danse Macabre asked me to "audition" and I was told by someone that "it's such an honour to be invited to join Danse Macabre!" (You know who you are and I've been paying for your statement ever since, thank you very much.) My "audition," which was possibly the only one ever given to a musician joining Northern Danse Macabre, consisted of Donnie and Ted asking:

"Can you play an A-minor?"
me: *bling*
D&T: "Can you play an E-minor?"
me: *bling*
D&T: "Can you play a D-minor?"
me: *bling*
D&T: "You're in the band!"

We jazzed up the Bones tunes and hit the streets of Casa hard, with mandolin machine heads pointing to the sky... That was in 2003, and I pushed the Bones to do more shows in 2004. We wound up doing 26 weekends of faire in 2004, mostly as Macabre and with me acting as GM on several occasions. Sherri and I started up Jingly Bits at SLO in 2005 because organizing the Bones to work as many shows as we wanted to was prohibitive. We also wanted to be out on the streets interacting with our patrons more than is customary when one is Dead...

Jingly Bits has been playing the streets and stages of events from Pembrooke, Willits, Calaveras, and Ione, and down to SLO, Visalia, Fresno and Bakersfield ever since. During that time, if we've offended anyone's senses or historical sensibilities and thus made their snobbish teeth itch, I would like to apologize. I won't actually apologize, but really, I'd like to... Personally, I've never been snobbishly period, though I have been periodically snobbish... Even though many of our songs weren't exactly period, (can you say "Flogging Molly?") I think we brought a lot of high energy to all of our performances. I know we put everything we could into them and the folks that did watch us seemed to enjoy it a lot.

Speaking of folks watching us, I'd also like to take a moment to thank all our fans... Oh, the appreciative roar of the crowd and the loving crush of our adoring fans... To all our fans, we're going to miss both of you terribly...

Anyway, no more Jingly Bits at faires in northern California,

BUT!!!

You have ONE LAST chance to catch us before we go. The day after we made the excruciating decision to leave, we were offered a paying pub gig! On St. Patrick's Day, Monday, March 17th, Jingly Bits will be giving their final performance in California. From 6pm until at least 8pm, we will be on the patio of O'Flaherty's Irish Pub in downtown San Jose. It's a pub, after all, so Master Thomas unfortunately can't be there with us, but we would be honored if some of you were to make it to the show to see us off.

It's hard to believe our run as Jingly Bits is over in California, but it is. We WILL be continuing on, and are already gatelisted for a faire in April in Joplin, Missouri. Once we get settled in after the move, there are several other faires within a hundred mile radius... We'll also probably try to work TRF at some point. There are also numerous SCA events in the area... I'm going to be taking some of the techie stuff I can do and apply it to woodworking and making period furniture, games, toys, weapons, and household items that would fit in at ren faires, SCA events and even Civil War re-enactments. (One of my prototype folding chairs and 20 of my lucets were supposed to be with a vendor at the Sonora Celtic Faire this weekend, by the way, but we've not heard how they did or if the vendor even made it there...) When or if we come back to CA, it might very well be as vendors...

Again, sorry this is so long winded, but you'd expect nothing less from me, would you? So, I'll sign off now... It would be far too strange and too painfully strained to hear or read blogs about how great this faire was or how fantastic the after-hours stuff was at that faire or what's planned for the other faire... To that end, I'll be leaving all the NorCal faire related tribes I'm part of and will be deleting most of the faire folks on my friends list. No offense is meant, but it would be too painful to be reminded over and over again of what we had to leave behind... If you notice your friend count dropping by one in the next few days, it was probably me...

Thanks to all that have made this long strange trip as wild a ride as it has been... We'd love to see some of you at O'Flaherty's on St. Patrick's Day. If you can't make, that's fine and understandable and we'll just wish nothing but the best for you as you rot in Hell... If you can make it, that'd be great! (If you do go, park in the garage across San Pedro street from the pub and get the barkeep to validate your ticket...)

Take care and may all your journeys be safe ones, where ever they might take you.

Goodbye, my friends...

Hey all you pagan faire goers! Help!

Folks,

It has been a toughie last end of the year for this one. Just before samhain my step-mum crossed over. Buried her before Thanksgiving. Now having to be over at my dads home 3-4 days a week, looking after him, and already dealing with other problems. Lost the vision in my left eye. Had to postpone weight loss surgery. Having to deal with worthle4ss free advice of mid western relatives.

Not sure if I can work Southern Faire. Money issues, student loans,( just got my Master's Degree), and relatives wanting me to move in with my dad, which would really be the death of me! And i mean it, all ways socially, spiritually and means of privacy. I've told my relatives it ain't happening. I will be there a few days weekly, but not moving to an area and jsut leave behind where i've been anchored and know where everything is.

These people act like it's so fucking easy to do that. just pick up, leave and move somewhere where you have nothing in common with. OK, let one of them leave Missouri and do that. Faire is where I live, and don't see these people except at Faire. So, I might see if i can change my schedule, because I will NOT attend as a customer.

could use some spiritual uplifting to the God/dess/es for a little (actually a hell of a lot) help and assistance, and wisdom here, folks. Help!!!!!

Love you all,
Stolen Trailer

I just got this from my guild news. Thought that I would pass it on. Send me a message if you know anything.

Thank you
Angie McPherson
Clan Galbraith
Pendragon Costumes

This information was sent by a friend. I thought it was something
that needed to be passed around.

St. Gyles trailer, with all of their props has been stolen. Please
share this information with anyone in our world you think of. Maybe
someone can catch a `fire sale' and let the rest of us know, so we
can recover at least some of what they've lost.

The sad thing is that they've recently replaced a pavilion or
two...Panther Pavilions run about $2,500. They also had some older
ones, about 4 total, so that's about $10k worth of props, in addition
to everything else...the rugs, ewers, platters, trunks, etc.

The trailer, license plate number 4EA3550, was in Hayward, parked on
the curb outside a guildmember's home. It was a 16' long, by 6' wide
by 7' tall, white, no-name cargo trailer. It was stolen some time
Sunday night.

Looking for Songs, variations, jokes and parodies

Hello faire folk,
I am looking for faire jokes, stories, songs, parodies and variations that we might not sing in front of the crowds. I am looking for those song verses that we only sing at the end of day on those last weekends were we wont get in trouble for it.

If it is a random verse for drunken sailor you made up on the fly, Great! Does if have the bellman getting hit by a bus, cool. Even better. If it is dirty, talking about someone, something faire related or not I would love to know it. Want to make something new, now is the time. (and if anyone has other versions of the opening and closing parade song I would really love to know them)

Know a good or bad joke faire related but not (i.e. how many puritans does it take to screw in a light bulb…) I want to know it. Or want to make up a bunch of bad ren faire jokes. Now is your chance.

Ever tell the young faire brats stories of the night life (which may or may not be true), or of the privy monster, or the dragon in the maze. I want to know it.

Basiclly all those little things we say, sing, talk about and put on pins that only we as faire people really understand. I would like to know and I think others would be interested too. So message me or just reply here.

Why? I am taking a folklore class at CSU Sacramento and will be writing a paper about the folklore we have. Some who did the Casa Faire this year may remember the pink surveys I passed out and thank you greatly to those that responded. I would like to write down some of the things we say, do, sing and joke about that haven’t been written yet. I would like others to understand who we are and why we spend so much time and money and energy and life on faire. So if you would please help me out for class if for no other reason that would be wonderful.

And please don’t worry I am faire brat of the days of Blackpoint I would never write or do anything to hurt faire or who we are. This is strictly an academic adventure for my teacher and many things will be edited in the final drafts.

Thank you
Sarah

And yes this has been cross posted to many faire type tribes for maximum reply possibilities. And if you make up something new please claim it as your own and I will credit your work.

The Pirate Ball is March 15, 2008 at the Verdi Club 2424 Mariposa Street, San Francisco, CA 94110 doors open at 8PM. The ticket price is $30 in advance or $40 at the door.

One Day Fair July 5th Santa Clara needs some help:)

Hello- Our local alternative group is hosting a Charity drive party and our theme this year is a Renaissance Fair. Last year we raised about $3500.00 in one day with a simple flat rate entrance fee and lots of fun entertainments once folks got through the gates, and this year we want to ROCK--- sooooo...
i am reaching out to the larger Ren Fair world, offering a place for vendors to sell with no up front table costs, and for those who are into performing that would like to volunteer some time in exchange for free entrance and a full meal.

Please e-mail me off list at i999shadow@aol.com for more info, to give me some advice, or just exchange ideas... sword fighting skills, jugglers, madrigal singers especially welcome!

thanks, shadow

It is my sad duty to let you all know that the matron of our

Services will be held for her at the Masonic Temple in Napa at
4pm on Sunday December, 30th. The address for the Masonic Temple is
4125 Solano Avenue, Napa, CA 94558. There will be a potluck reception
immediately following so please feel free to bring a food item if you
so choose.

EVERYONE that knew Joan is invited to attend and speak if you
would like. If you know of anyone that doesn't have access to email
please feel free to pass on this information.

Also Ken will be unable to attend these services as he is also
currently in the hospital. The family has asked to restrict visitors
at this time so he can get well. I will post more information as it
becomes available. Messages for Ken can be sent to Tim Jesus at
tjconsult@aol. com and will be delivered on a regular basis.

Flowers for the services can be sent to her granddaughter
Marisa's home and will be brought to the services.
**MWOW is holding Auditions for an ALTO!**

MWOW is Auditioning!
The Merry Wives of Windsor are seeking one awesome woman to come play with us. We play at Renaissance Faires around Southern California and sometimes even venture up North. We usually play 2 to 3 large shows a year outside of the Renaissance Faire circuit. This past year we played The Galaxy, The Orange International Street Faire, The Derby and The Grove. We have released three CDs and we will be recording a fourth sometime in our future.

We currently have nine members in the Wives and we are seeking the magical 10th. We have Bouzouki, Mandolin, Bodhran, Fiddle & Bass as our core instruments. If you can expand on that list, come show us! We rehearse Tuesday evenings from 7:30 to 10:pm in Pasadena. Rehearsals are required. We do take small breaks but we are a year around group.

Here is what we need:

Alto (F2 - D5)
Strong sight reading skills
Instrumentation a plus (please bring the instrument to the audition if you want it to count)
Previous Renaissance Faire experience desired but NOT required
Team player with a love for group action (no - NOT like that)
21 or older

The audition will include the following elements:

One song, acapella, any genre - but tell us a story with your singing
One Mwow song for which we will provide music in advance
You will sight read one or more Mwow songs
You will play any instruments that you wish to be considered as part of your audition
You will sing each Mwow song that we use in the audition with a soprano and mezzo; we will be looking at blend and balance
You will rehearse with us on the evening of the audition to see how we all work together. This also allows you to decide if you like how we work.

The first four steps of the audition will take place with the directors and a bouzouki player only. The rest of the audition will be during rehearsal with all members of the band plus auditionees.

The auditions will take place on:

Tuesday, January 15 starting at 6:30pm in Pasadena. You need to plan on being there until 10:pm though we may break earlier than that.

Thanks so much! We are really looking forward to meeting you.
The Merry Wives of Windsor

**********************

If you are interested contact Heather at heathergreene AT sbcglobal DOT net (Obviously change to normal email format) to set up an audition time and to receive your music.

Bald Women?

Why might a young adult (actually, I guess she'd be middle age at this time, wouldn't she?) woman in Elizabethan England be bald? What would happen to her? What would people think? What class would she likely be? What would she be afflicted with?

An enquiring mind really really wants to know all the deets!

Does anyone know where I can look to get lyrics for as many of the songs sung at faire? I am going to put them all in one journal to keep with me. If anyone knows where I can go it would be appriciated. Or if there are any song books used by different people, would it be possible to either get a copy or borrow a copy to get stuff out of? I can pay for the cost of copying. Thanks for all your help.

Help specifically for Faire Folk!!

Information from Kathy J. Kingman-Solum. Please respond to her
directly at the email address at the bottom of this missive if you
are interested in working on this great project.

Dear Friends,

As you know our friends in Southern California are fighting fires in
over 15 counties. Hundreds of thousands of acres have burned,
hundreds of thousands of people have been displaced, and thousands
have watched their homes destroyed. I was disturbed enough thinking
that my parents live an area that has been placed on high alert,
but It has now come to light that our friend David Springhorn has
become a victim of this disaster. His home and his workshop along
with countless items of memorabilia and artifacts from a long and
loved tenure in this community are gone.

There are many disaster relief programs that have been established to
help people monetarily when disaster strikes. There will be programs
for those who have lost their homes, insurance payments will be
collected and mundane possessions replaced. However, the very special
and creative people that we know, will still have a void that cannot
be filled by the well planned rescue and relief organizations that
are there for everyone else. Something has to happen to enable the
big hearted people of this community to come together and pool
resources to assist those who are a part of our extended family.

I have initiated a California specific outreach program that will
help people like us. I have contacted a lawyer (also a Faire person)
who is at this time organizing the paperwork that will begin a
not-for profit foundation to aid the people of our community when
disaster strikes. We will have what is necessary to collect donations
by Wednesday of this week.

The goals of this organization are to:
* Replace destroyed musical instruments, especially those that
are period specific
* Replenish costume wardrobes
* Buy new tools for specialized trades such as potting wheels and
lathes
* Collect monies for continued support of those who might be
victims in the future.
* Create a Disaster Relief CD with the help of the generous
talents of the musicians in our community
* Lend emotional support through letters cards and time from our
community
* Lastly and most importantly, coordinate our network of caring
people, to replace lost photographs with similar ones from other
people's collections, and contact the artisans who originally made
lost memorabilia to replace items that could never be recovered
through insurance claims.

Many people have already begun work to achieve these goals. Musical
directors are connecting with their groups to put together the CD,
clothing vendors are offering to donate costume pieces, and a website
is in the works to get our message out to the public. Costumers have
volunteered their time to replace specific costume pieces and I will
file for a DBA and not-for-profit status on Monday to enable us to
collect tax deductible donations.

Our focus will begin with David, he has been a member of this
community for many years and has touched many hearts. He has lost
much and will need our support. Should anyone else come forward with
a need we will of course do what we can to help them as well but in
helping David to our fullest capacity, we will open the gates to
helping others as well.

To do this right we will need the support of not only the big hearted
givers who are able to give cash, but the help of you as directors,
owners, and managers. You have the unique ability to bring people
together and make a difference. If you are interested in becoming a
part of this effort please let me know. I have several form letters
that can be personalized for you or your company and dispersed
quickly through missives and social groups like those on Tribe.net.
The following are some immediate needs for the success of the
foundation, a full list of needs will be available on request.

We need:
* A Board of Directors, please e-mail me with a letter of
interest if you would like to be a part of the board.
* Friends who know those affected to come forward with photos and
stories.
* Writers who will hand write a card or a letter with anecdotes
and kind words of encouragement and love
* A recording studio for musicians to record the CD that will be
sold in an effort to raise money
* An artist to donate his or her talents towards the look of the
site, the CD and to create a logo for the Foundation
* Someone to help organize letter writing campaigns, find people
who may have old footage or voice recordings and bring out
memorabilia the owners are willing to donate.

I have communicated with many prominent directors through-out
California. Every Response has been extremely supportive and many
have committed to being on board any plan we come up with. Great
minds are at work and we need you to be a part of it. Please join me
at the Ca Faire Participants Disaster Relief Tribe
<http://tribes.tribe.net/fairefrienddisasterrelief>http://tribes.tribe.net/fairefrienddisasterrelief
Suggestions are welcome. Please send this on to those who may be
interested

Update on MacIain - Ken & Joan Wiepert

Just an FYI to let you know that Joan is home. I know Ken would love to
hear from folks. My understanding is that they have hospice care
helping for now. I am sad to say that it's really a matter of time
before she passes. As you can imagine, this is extremely hard on her
family, especially Ken. Please send a card, flowers, or phone...they
would love to hear from you.

Thank you so much.

"Storm'n Norman" Woods was hit by a car while riding his bicycle on the night of October 31st.
As far as I know, his death was immidiate and he did not suffer.
Shannon and Wayno are helping his family to deal with details, memorial service and such.
If you would like more info, message me and I will forward their phone #.
Shannon said she looks forward to hearing from our family, and no one should hesitate to call for more info.

Norman, thank you for everything.

Ravenswood Leather Surcoat (Size Large) For Sale

(I hope it's kosher to post this here. Saw a couple of other for-sale posts, so assuming it's allowable.)

Have an almost-but-not-quite-new (worn at one gig) Ravenswood Leather surcoat for sale. Similar to the coat in the top two photos here:

http://ravenswoodleather.com/Trenchcoats/ravensurcoat.html

The particular coat for sale has their "R-2 Sleeves" (removable two-part) and antique brass finish button closures. Unique to this one, not normally offered on their web site, are hip pockets and a distinctive olive color.

Size is large. It's almost too roomy on my 6 foot, 165# frame...ideally it would fit someone of similar or slightly taller height, and moderately heavier with an athletic build (perhaps up to 200#) if you want to be able to fasten the buttons (or a bit of belly is okay if you leave the front open).

With the unique additions and after sales tax, this cost over $800 new. It was worn to only one faire, where friends quickly dubbed it "The Jacket of Hawtness." It's gorgeous and of course smells wonderful. TEN POUNDS of leather! Unfortunately paying bills takes precedence over "hawtness," so the jacket will have to go.

Before I go dealing with the mouth-breathers on eBay, I'd rather offer it up here if possible. Hoping to get $500 or best reasonable offer, which would include postage anywhere in the U.S. I have a PayPal account if that helps.

Some photos of the jacket:

Tips for Titties and RESCU Rally

It's that time again when the night ale stand will gather all our tips and donate them to those doing the Breast Cancer Walk. We ALL love the breast (ours, our friends, our lovers, our neighbors, everyone's!), so lets dig out those extra coins and paper things and bring them along to the ale stand. Last year, we collected over $700 to donate.

And while you're in a giving mood, the RESCU Rally is also that night. So dig doubly deep to help your fellow Ren Faire performers and crew and crafters. =)

P.S. Info on RESCU:
website - http://www.rescufoundation.org/
Mission Statement - The RESCU Foundation is a non-profit 501(c)3 organization established to promote financial relief and comfort to renaissance festival participants and their families who have experienced medical disruptions and subsequent extreme difficulties.

Musicians needed for bellydancer at the Connecticut Ren Faire Oct 6,7,8 + Oct 20, 21 (and maybe the weekend inbetween?)

The Connecticut Ren Faire (www.ctfaire.com) is approaching, and they like volunteers. I have signed up to bellydance around the faire and had previously arranged for a band from the NYRF to come up a couple of weekends to play for me.

Unfortunately, since there's no $$ involved, when my musicians got offered a paying gig somewhere else, they backed out.

This leaves me music-less.

Is there anyone in the Hebron, CT area who is musically skilled and interested in volunteering at the Connecticut Ren Faire during October, playing music for me to dance to? I'll be there primarily Columbus day weekend, and closing weekend (Oct 20 and 21).

Darbuka, dumbek, hand drum, fife, flute, bagpipes, violin, fiddle, clarinet, hurdy gurdy, whatever - if you think I can bellydance to it, send me a message or post here and we'll try to work something out. I would of course, prefer someone who is familiar with Middle Eastern rhythms, but I've danced to a pretty wide variety of stuff.

Again, it's not a paying gig, but you're welcome to sell CDs of your own music, if you've got them, and play for hat.

Hopefully,
how hard can it be to have a Ren Faire?

my guess is it ain't easy, but our Ren faire in WV has been canceled indefinitely. I would like to get another one started, or bring one to our area. To give you an idea, our Ren faire was a smallish event, held for 2 days at the WV tamarack in early October, since it's too late for that, I'm figuring around early May, & keep it going for 2 days,(we have short attention span in WV) also our Renfaire was free to get into, cause alot of people volunteered to make it happen, if you have any ideas, please message me or post em here, feel free to tell me I'm in over my head:)!
